LOBAMBA – FIFA is supporting the call for Eswatini referees to officiate in major CAF Champions League matches.

Visiting FIFA Refereeing Instructor Felix Tangawarima stressed that he expected the country’s referees to man games in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup group stages in a year or so. He was reacting to their ‘commitment’ during the closing ceremony of the FIFA Member Associations Refereeing Course at Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Technical Centre in Lobamba yesterday.
“It has been a wonderful week.

“I have an undertaking to ensure Eswatini referees officiate in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup group stages in a year or so,” said Tangawarima.
Local referees do officiate in CAF matches, but rarely feature in the bigger matches, especially in the group stages of the inter-club competitions.

In his address, Tangawarima further commended EFA for accounting for all equipment presented to it.
Top referees and instructors were in class and they included Member of Parliament (MP) nominee Bhekizizwe Mkhabela from Ntondozi and Thulani Sibandze. The latter spoke on behalf of the participants, assuring that they were ready to make the right calls in games after the classes.

“We’re grateful to the Football Association for the classes.
“This is a challenge to be among the top referees in Africa. The classes have been of great help. Our reading of the game and anticipation will be improved in the new season,” he said.
EFA President Adam ‘Bomber’ Mthethwa officially closed the course and expressed hope that mistakes would be minimal from referees.
“Accept criticism,” he told the referees.
Mthethwa further stressed that his office remained committed to human resource development.
