JAZZ FACE KNICKS IN REPLAY MATCH
MBABANE - The SNBL has finally granted Mbabane Knicks their wish. This is after Knicks demanded, two months ago, a re-match of their game against Mbabane Jazz, which was abandoned. Noteworthy is that Knicks abandoned the game after it appeared that there were no shot-clocks.
A shot-clock is a timer designed to increase the game’s pace and scoring. The offensive team must attempt to get the ball into the basket by the ball leaving the player’s hand before the shot-clock expires, and the shot must either touch the rim or enter the basket. If the offensive team fails to register a field goal attempt within the time limit, they are assessed a violation resulting in a turnover to their opponents; if the ball hits or enters the rim after the clock expires, it is not a violation so long as it left the player’s hand before expiration, which 24 seconds.
Knicks Manager Banele Lukhele confirmed that SNBL had agreed to their plea.
“Firstly, it is mandatory that we have a shot clock, it’s part of the rules and we could not risk playing without a shot-clock. It was not a protest as such but a plea for the league commissioner to consider our grievances. We are happy that we have been granted a re-match,” Lukhele said.
Swaziland National Basketball League (SNBL) technical member, Mandisa Zwane said they had decided to replay the fixture.
“The first round games are over. However, there is one fixture which would be replayed. That is Mbabane Jazz and Mbabane Knicks clash. The game was abandoned due to that there were no shot-clocks on particular weekend. We have communicated this to both teams but we have not confirmed the date yet,” Zwane said. Meanwhile, Jazz President, Bongani Shiba also admitted the SNBL has alerted them about the latest developments.
“The SNBL has communicated to us that we will have to replay our game with Knicks. We are just waiting for SNBL to tell us the exact date and time. We have no problem replaying the game,” Shiba said. Swaziland National Sports and Recreation Council (SNSRC) came to the basketball league rescue as they gave two shot-clocks. The estimated prize of a shot-clock is E30 000.
