MBABANE – It’s a big win for football and boxing, as well as sports in general in the national parliamentary elections.

Nearly all the names in football and sports made it to the august House. At Sigwe, ex-Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs David ‘Cruiser’ Ngcamphalala retained his parly seat. He amassed 2 546 votes. Ngcamphalala had been expected to succeed after his brilliant work as minister in the previous government. Another candidate who was bound to make it and did so in flying colours, was former national team Sihlangu head coach, Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga. The Mater Dolorosa High School teacher is the new Mbabane East MP, taking over from long-serving Esther Dlamini, whom he beat in the Primary Elections. His journey to success began that day. Bulunga, who now also has to relinquish teaching and his coach position at Moneni Pirates, got 2 971 votes.

Coming second to him was former Swaziland National Sport and Recreation Council (SNSRC) chairman, Sikhatsi Dlamini, who is also ex-Billiards Association of Swaziland (BAS) President. Bulunga had also applied for the vacant Sihlangu coaching job but was not shortlisted in the top three candidates. Also making it from football was Matsapha United former co-director Victor Malambe and Sibusiso ‘Scorpion’ Nxumalo of Mhlume Peacemakers, currently trading as Matsapha United. Nxumalo is United’s new Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Board of Governor after his team, Peacemakers purchased the elite status. He is Madlangemphisi MP with 3 318 votes, while Malambe came out with 2 258 votes to be Mhlume MP. Interesting was the fact that not only football people made it but boxing also got to be represented. Vincent Malavi Sihlongonyane, Swaziland Boxing Association (SWABA) treasurer, is Kukhanyeni Inkhundla MP after getting 2 597 votes. His victory was welcomed with joy by SWABA President Pearl Dlamini, who congratulated him.

“Sports have won. Our boxing also has its own representative. We were praying for a man of integrity like you bhuti (brother) to be voted for. It’s time for fireworks and champaigne,” she texted to Sihlongonyane in WhatsApp.
