OVER 25 AT MHLUME TENNIS TOURNAMENT
MHLUME – The scorching sun did not deter young tennis enthusiastic from participating in the one-day Mhlume Tennis Tournament.
The tournament, which was played at Mhlume Club Tennis Court, started at around 9am and ended at around 5pm.The tennis upcoming youngsters played in a round robin system. There were two categories, namely under 12 and 14.
Some of the main matches that attracted the over 50 spectators who were mainly parents and children, were that involving high performing Luching Sorokhaibam and fast improving Nkosephayo Siwela. It was a tightly contested game with both players showing some signs of maturity.
It was, however, the all-conquering Luching who emerged as the winner, beating her opponent 8-2 after a resistant start. In another match, Nkosephayo managed to salvage some pride when he beat Calvin Nxumalo 10-6 while Ncobelihle Lukhele showed some great strides when he outmuscled Sivakele Nxumalo 10-8 in another interesting clash of the titans.
Speaking after the games, Junior Tennis Initiative Programe Bongani Kunene said he was impressed with the standard of play.
“The future looks bright for these youngsters. You will be surprised that some of these children were playing in the mini-tennis court but now they have joined long tennis courts. Soon they will be joining the elite programme,” Kunene said.
Meanwhile, Mhlume Tennis Club coach Gabsile Mkhabela also concurred with Kunene.
“They say practice makes perfect. They are not yet there but we can see the progress.
We are happy that despite that it was a club tournament, we had visitors from Matsapha and Lobamba. Personally, I was happy to see young children like Temancele Mavuso and Andile Vilakati who played their best game on the day,” Mkhabela said.
