MBABANE – Two of the country’s athletics officials can now ‘dine with the big guns.’

Technical officials Harry Malindzisa and Selby Shongwe are now eligible to officiate in any competition in Africa after passing a Level II Course, which was sanctioned by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The Technical Official’s Course was held in Nairobi, Kenya in the past week.
Athletics Association of Eswatini Secretary Thoba Mazibuko confirmed the latest developments, saying the country had no representation since the withdrawal of their first representative.

“The Association is proud of the two, who now are the second and third emaSwati to reach this level after Kenneth Makhanya, who was the first, was removed because of being inactive,” said Mazibuko.

Shongwe said they were honoured to get the opportunity and expressed hope that it would improve the standard of competitions in the country
“It is a step in the right direction in improving the staging of competitions.
“We’ll now be better organised, as we will plough back to the country the knowledge we will acquire abroad. Sponsors will further have confidence in coming on board,” said Shongwe.

Malindzisa also shared the same sentiments.

Good

“It’s good for the country. We will not only be rubbing shoulders with informed people, but we’ll put our knowledge into practice on the big stage. The experience we will gain will help us to improve the standard of officiating in the country,” he said.

Shongwe was the athletics’ mother body vice president until the Gideon Mthembu-Board resigned en masse recently. Malindzisa is in the interim committee chaired by TZD’s Zakhele Dlamini. The pair will officiate in both Regional and African Championships.
