STRIDERS 400KM MILEAGE RESUMES

MBABANE - Their target is to complete 400km of road training in the month of February. The wait is over. Manzini Striders Athletics Club’s record breaking 400km millage starts tomorrow morning. The club’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Happiness Mthethwa said this fitness initiative was in preparation for their upcoming cross boarder races, which are South Africa’s Kosmos three-in-one Race, the Two Oceans Race, Iren Race and Comrades’ Marathon.


Target


To cover the 400km target, Mthethwa said the team will embark on a 10km morning run, starting tomorrow at 4:15am from Mavuso Sports Ground and then challenge their strengths in a 50km long run every Saturday.
Weekend routes are Ngculwini to Bulunga, Mavuso Sports Ground to Mdzimba Mountain, Luyengo to Scunusa and finally Mavuso Sports Ground to Sigcineni.


“We have set really high goals for the club this year and we are targeting to cover 100km of training each week in preparation for South African races which we join annually.
This is also meant to improve our fitness and speed levels. Our starting point will be the 73km Kosmos Race billed for March 9, 2019,” Mthethwa said.


Challenge


She further said athletes who are interested in standing up to the 400km challenge were welcome to join. Striders is a Manzini-based athletics club and has done a remarkable job in the past by representing the kindom in the 90km long Combrades’ Marathon. Last year, the country’s ‘Ironman’ lady, Karen Hemmingsson, from this club was the first liswati to cross the finish line, clocking in 9hours 55minutes. Bongiwe Shongwe and the club’s PRO clocked in at 10:05hours and 11:01hours respectively.
