LOBAMBA – Athletics Association of Swaziland (AAS) interim committee and member clubs have resolved to defer their meeting in which the decision whether to choose a new committee or keep the interim until next year’s elections will be made.

President Gideon Mthembu and Sipho Vilakati had taken their five members of its interim committee to court for allegedly being in office illegally. These comprise AAS Secretary General Thoba Mazibuko, TZD Athletics Club Director Zakhele Dlamini, Manzini Athletics Club (MAC) coach Muzi Mabuza, Harry Malindzisa and Deli Simelane.

Despite winning round one, where the president and Vilakati sought a court order to stop a Special Assembly scheduled for January, 12, 2019, on January 25, 2019, the High Court set aside the magistrate’s ruling.
Consequently, an urgent meeting was called by the interim committee yesterday at the Technical Centre in Lobamba. Member clubs were given two options.

One of these was to have the interim committee appoint an electoral officer and give the member clubs 27 days’ notice where they will nominate candidates in 14 days to hold elections for a new committee to be appointed.
For option two, the member clubs were allowed to grant the current interim committee the chance to hold office until 2020 when the elections are bound to take place.
While in office, the interim committee will be expected to review the constitution, which was said to have numerous loopholes.

They will also be expected to amend imprecise policies and procedures outlined in the same constitution.
After assessing the two options, a majority of the member clubs opted for the second option, which is to have the interim committee hold office until the 2020 elections and review the constitution.

However, the interim committee, at the meeting chaired by Dlamini (the lawyer) advised member clubs to have the meeting postponed and held after two weeks. The reason to defer the meeting, according to Dlamini, was to engage the Confederation of African Athletics in Southern Region (CAASR). The regional organisation is expected to bring an observer and adviser during the proposed meeting where the member clubs will choose the most favourable option.
Member clubs endorsed the proposal and correspondence will be done to communicate the new dates of the meeting.
