MBABANE – Balancing between fitness and ball skills is essential in succeeding in the world of football.

Soccer players need all-around fitness to be successful on the field and all of that starts in the gym. This notion was affirmed by Mbabane Club fitness coach and face of bodybuilding in the kingdom of Eswatini, Arnaldo Barbosa, who felt that there was a need to balance between ball skills and fitness for our local players. He has reached out to players to level up their game in the pitch with awesome and rewarding gym training programmes.

He said one of the major challenges encountered by our local players when they go for trials in more developed countries, is that they are normally rated low, judging by their physique and fitness strength. He said his vision as a personal coach was to familiarise soccer players with the gym. He argued that some players have the skills but lack endurance and that is why they need to work hard on it by challenging themselves in the gym.

“My vision is to invite team managements to introduce a gym programme for players.  This is a call to coaches to invest in their players and build them up and make them more valuable, and that can not only be achieved through exercising in the sports ground but also in the gym, using the necessary equipment that will facilitate the construction of the perfect soccer body,” said Barbosa.

The bodybuilder, who is also a die-hard soccer fanatic, acknowledged that the country has remarkable players. He said the best soccer players need the combination of speed, agility and stamina to outlast their opponents in the pitch.
“Finding the balance in your work-outs is the best way to turn yourself into an all-around player, and strength training is the basis of that process,” Barbosa quoted Jordan Webb, who is a strength and conditioning coach for Major Soccer’s Chicago.
He recommended players to hit the gym at least twice a week and also be cautious of their nutrition because their fitness success would be determined by the kind of food they eat. Responding to this matter, Manzini Wanderers Nigerian striker, Ohakwe Ugochukwu, supported Barbosa’s vision. He said a physically fit player was not prone to injuries.
