NICHOLAS DOMINATES
MBABANE – Seasoned golfer Nicholas Vilakati was the biggest winner during the Eswatini Royal Insurance Corporation’s (ESRIC) Monthly Mug competition played at the Mbabane Golf Club on Saturday.
Vilakati, who is regular feature in golf competitions in the country, swept the boards by winning both trophies that were at stake in the competition. He beat close to 50 other golfers to win both the net and gross prizes on 69 points.
In fact, he won the gross prize on a countback after it transpired that the original winner Meshack Zwane, who is a professional golfer, was not eligible to receive it by virtue of not being a registered member with the Mbabane Golf Club.
The second position went to Sive Dlamini with a 70 net and he was followed by Mbabane Golf Club captain Genius Sihlongonyane on 71. Actually, Sihlongonyane outpaced on a countback the likes of Kenneth Nkambule and Evart Madlopha. Placed sixth with a 72 net was senior golfer Mike Zwane, who was followed by Rasheed Mohammed with a 73 net.
Commenting about his sweet victory, Vilakati said he did not start well in the first nine holes but was somehow able to motivate himself to improve in the last round.
“I told myself not to panic and remained focused throughout. My aim this year is to try and play better golf and improve on my iron shots. Hopefully, it will come around and I may be able to win a few tournaments,” he said
Last month’s ESRIC Monthly Mug was won by Bafana Hlophe on 68 net.
