JOHANNESBURG – Former Spain’s FC Barcelona’s top striker Samuel Eto’o was a hit at the Castle Lager’s Africa 5’s social football league which was launched in grand style at Soweto’s Chaf Pozi yesterday.
Eto’o, four-times African Player of the Year, was the main guest again in the tournament’s second edition attended by all eight counties, namely Eswatini, Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, Zambia, Ghana, Nigeria and Zimbabwe.
The former Cameroonian international is part of the legends associated with the vibrant social football league alongside former Sihlangu striker Siza ‘King Pele’ Dlamini, Tinashe Nengomasha (Zimbabwe), Christopher Katongo (Zambia), Amanda Dlamini (South Africa), Ivo Mapunda (Tanzania) and Matthew Booth (South Africa).

“The inclusion of Ghana and Nigeria shows the growth of the event itself. It’s a good tournament that helps to make good friends all over the continent,” the soft-as-silk former Barcelona and England’s Chelsea striker told the media afterwards.
Amanda Dlamini, the former Banyana Banyana striker and TV soccer analyst, was announced as the first female ambassador for the Africa 5’s during the event which attracted sports journalists from across the African continent. Renowned SABC Sports Show, Sports@10 anchor, Thomas Mlambo was the master of ceremonies.
Castle Lager Brand director, Vaugahan Croeser expressed delight at the growth of the tournament.
“We are thrilled by the return of the Africa 5’s league, which is set to be bigger and better than last year’s edition. The inclusion of women is not only integral in sustaining societal interactions but an emphasis on Castle Lager’s position of being at the forefront of fortifying bonds and friendships,” he said.
The final of the tournament will be staged in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. The ultimate winners of the tournament will walk-away with an all-expenses paid trip to a Ligue 1 match in Milan hosted by Samuel Eto’o.
