DREAM START FOR HAYLEY
(At Sifundzani Primary)
MBABANE – Record breaker Hayley Hoy started the National Championships on a high yesterday when she won the 1 500m freestyle.
She outpaced four swimmers in Keana Toepfer, Kyla Webb, Nina Hlophe and Siwakhile Dlamini. This was during the opening of the six-day championships sponsored by Nedbank. The championships started yesterday and they will end on Sunday.
The swimmers had to swim 60 laps in the 25m long pool.
Hayley, who is from the CANA Zone IV Games in Namibia, said she was happy that on her debut in the 1 500m, she came first.
tired
The 10-year-old Swim Lab swimmer said she felt tired but she had to push herself hard to win and finish the event.
“Last year I won the 400Im on my debut and I’m happy that this year I did in the 1 500m. It is one of the toughest events, considering that you have to do 60 laps,” she added.
The championships will continue for the next five days and this evening, the swimmers will compete in the 800m freestyle with the 400IM billed for tomorrow.
Eswatini Swimming Association (ESA) Secretary Lee Ann Young said full disqualification rules as per FINA would be applied to all events.
compile
Young said the full results would be released today as they were yet to compile them and also confirm if there was a national record broken. All events will be swum as separate gender events. Floating trophies will be awarded to juniors (12 and under) and seniors (13 years and Over) Victor and Victrix Ludorum based on the swimmers’ best eight events.
