DOWNS HOPEFUL
MBABANE – He could man the poles against Manzini Wanderers on Sunday afternoon in the EswatiniBank Cup Last 16 clash.
Manzini Sundowns have a bit of hope he will be fit and ready for the match as he began light training on Wednesday. That is their first-choice goalkeeper Lwethu Simelane, who sustained yet another injury last Sunday against the same rivals in the MTN Premier League.
“He is doing light training after getting the green light to do so. We are crossing our fingers that he is certified ready before our clash against Wanderers,” said the club’s PRO Muzi Matsenjwa.
Matsenjwa said having a full squad always gave the technical bench good options, otherwise they also trusted in their reserve goalie Phila Mamba, who had been manning the poles recently due to Simelane’s yellow card suspension and injuries.
Rally
“We are going all out to try and turn the tables in this match and, our supporters must come in their numbers to rally behind the players. This is the EswatiniBank Cup not the league, so it is a whole new game for us,” Matsenjwa said.
He said it was important that their supporters came in numbers to lift the players’ spirits as they do battle against their hub rivals. Wanderers beat Sundowns 2-0 in the league second round last Sunday at Somhlolo National Stadium, right where they’ll meet again.
Their clash will be preceded by another repeat of last week’s league fixtures between Mbabane Highlanders and Matsapha United at 1:30pm, while the main match is at 3:35pm. Highlanders outfoxed Matsapha United 3-1 in the league clash, completing a treble of success against the latter, having won 1-0 in the first round and by same margin in the Ingwenyama Cup quarter-final recently.
