QUEEN OF THE ROAD
MBABANE – It’s a big year for long-distance athlete Sithembile Nzalo. The athlete, who is on a high in half marathon races, is yet to taste defeat in the year 2019, having conquered two 21km races already.
She is taking over the mantle in half marathons from Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) athlete Winile Mnisi who had been dominating for the past six years.
The TZD athlete still has little international experience having only competed in South Africa and Botswana last year. Her running career started late in 2017 after being identified by TZD Athletics Club. Her outstanding performance did not go unnoticed on Saturday when she stormed to victory in the Tuff One 21km race as there was a loud cheers at the finishing line from her team, TZD Athletics Club and other runners.
Nzalo is among the pupils recruited by the club from the Lubombo Region by the club Director Zakhele Dlamini with coach Maxwell Nkabinde. Her performance has improved drastically since last year. She has already competed in high profile races in the country including the Imbube Marathon and the SFRA Marathon where she also did very well.
Her next challenge is the TZD Half Marathon to be held at her own backyard, Siteki on March 30.
Times: In 2019, you have already won two 21km races, how do you feel about that?
Sithembile: It is not easy but working hard at training and commitment are the secret behind my success. I feel happy but I believe I can still do better as more races are coming.
