MBABANE – The public cannot know senior national football team Sihlangu head coach Kostadin Papic’s salary.

This is news from the august House at Lobamba following the House of Assembly session with the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs early this week when new Minister Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga took a lot of questions from the Legislature.

These included Serbian coach Papic’s salary as they wanted to know how much he was being paid as they questioned why locals were not hired for the national post.

Bulunga returned with responses on Wednesday.
“The salary of the coach, while it should be known, is requested not to be made public,” he responded.

It was a brief response from the minister. Interestingly, he also had been the national team coach but his contract was not renewed in 2016 despite a great COSAFA Cup performance by Sihlangu as the team finished third and earned Felix Badenhorst the top scorer award.

His salary was made public after it was leaked by impeccable sources to this newspaper as well as Papic’s contract offer was reported recently. The figures far outweigh what Bulunga earned in his tenure, which ended with a huge public outcry including the previous Parliament and government.

Motshane Member of Parliament (MP) Robert Magongo had questioned the minister on the coach’s salary. The honourable MP also wanted to know why television broadcast rights were given to foreign companies and why the elite football fines were too steep.

“International matches are televised in terms of the minimum standards set by international football bodies. The current landscape shows that local entities still have challenges to meet the required international standards.
