MBABANE – Swazi Slojos runner Sifiso Ngcobo has finally matched 33-time Mbabane Parkrun winner Nkululeko Gama’s record.

Ngcobo clocked an impressive 14:56 minutes during the weekly 5km timed run which started and finished at Mbabane Club yesterday. The Swazi Slojos athlete beat 100 runners who participated during the 98 edition of the race.
All along, Ngcobo’s personal best was 15:30 minutes which he set in December 2, 2017.This was during the 31st edition of the run when he finished second. Gama finished 15 seconds earlier that day. These two have been giving each other tense competition throughout the year. However, Gama had always emerged victorious in the weekly run.

On the other hand, Gama had set the 14:56 minutes record on January 2 last year during the 36th instalment of the weekly race. However, his record has been matched 14 months later.
Parkrun organiser Lean Drinkwater congratulated Ngcobo for his achievement.

“It is a good thing that he matched Gama’s record. He has his personal best record to break now,” Drinkwater said.
He also disclosed that the race was run on concrete surface because there was a golf tournament earlier in the morning.

“We could not run on the trails of the Mbabane Golf Course but had to walk/jog on the Thembelihle tar road. The turning point was at Eveni Galp Filling Station,” he said.
Gama was not part of the 98th edition.
