MANZINI – TZD Sports Club Director Zakhele Dlamini has been voted the new President of the Athletics Association of Eswatini (AAE).

This was during the athletics association’s general congress held at the EEC Lecture Conference Centre in Manzini yesterday. Present to monitor the elective congress on behalf of the International Association of Athletics (IAAF) was the CAA Southern Region 5 Secretary General Aleck Skhosana. Skhosana was in the country a fortnight ago in the company of the CAA Southern Region 5 President Moses Bantsi to assist AAE resolve the impasse of leadership that started in December 2018. They put a three-member Ad Hoc Committee to oversee the association affairs until yesterday’s elective congress.

Former Chairperson Gideon Mthembu opted not to run for the elections and Dlamini stood against aspirant Selby Shongwe. A total number of 21 member clubs had attended the elective congress and Dlamini won with 11 votes while Shongwe obtained nine. Worthy to note is that one vote had to be disregarded as the voter did not follow instructions of voting. Harry Malindzisa was voted the association’s vice chairperson and beat competitor Roy Dlamini with 11 votes to 10 votes. Bongani Nshalintshali beat Lenye Mtsetfwa and John Dlamini to win the treasurer position. Mancoba Nyoni, who also contested for this position, was absent, which automatically disqualified him. Msutfu Nkambule was voted the Chairperson of Track and Field while Sifiso Mkoko was named the Chairperson of Road and X country.

Female

Nonhlanhla Mathabela, the only female to win the elections, was voted Gender and Equity Chairperson. The Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) CEO Simanga Nhleko was given the duty of an Electoral Officer to oversee the elective congress. He urged the newly-appointed executive to abide by the constitution. His words were echoed by Skhosana. “You need to reach out to all the members, whether they had voted for or against you. The US constitution has a clause that stipulates that if you have power, share it with those you like and do not. Amendment of the constitution remains the utmost priority for the new executive,” he said. The IAAF representative said they wanted to come back to Eswatini during athletics events and awards presentations, not to resolve conflicts.
