LOBAMBA – Wasteful Manzini Wanderers continue to endure a terrible campaign following a 0-1 loss to league title-chasing Green Mamba here yesterday.

A lone first half strike by Linda Nkambule ensured Green Mamba remained in pursuit of their first league title since the 2010/11 season, as they slashed Royal Leopard’s lead to two points. They completed a double over the maroon and white outfit, who lost by the same scoreline in the reverse fixture. The latter were pushed closer to the relegation trapdoor after the MTN Premier League ‘Y’ello Sunday’ clash  at Somhlolo National Stadium while their league’s winless run against Caleb Ngwenya’s men was stretched to nine matches, which is a minimum of 810 minutes of football. Wanderers last celebrated a league win over Green Mamba back on September 24, 2014 and the score was 2-1.

Strongest

The Hub giants, who had fielded one of their strongest sides led by Ugochukwu Ohakwe and Mike Dombo upfront, remain four points above the drop zone and are only breathing because the teams below them in Moneni Pirates and Manzini Sundowns are equally stuttering. The latter suffered a shock 0-6 loss to Malanti Chiefs away in Pigg’s Peak yesterday. For the throngs of the visiting side’s loyalists, who crammed the stand adjacent to Parliament, it was heartbreak again, as the side had nothing to show for their better second half display. Their favourite side did enough to get at least a draw.  They let an average Green Mamba dictate terms during the early exchanges following clumsy defending. Sihle Mkhonta had to make a goal-line clearance, foiling Phinda ‘Phindrix’ Dlamini’s effort to keep the score goalless in the 13th minute.

In response, Wanderers’ Johnson Mensah broke free before he was stopped dead in his tracks by Sanele Khumalo just after the half-hour mark. Both teams attacked in dribs and drabs, but the hosts eventually found the breakthrough just before the interval. Nkambule, who later got injured, was at the end of a Njabulo Tfwala corner kick to fire home the opener from close range.  The goal separated the two teams when top referee Thulani Sibandze signalled for the breather.
