MELUSI TOO STRONG FOR MOKHOBO

MBABANE – Melusi Sihlongonyane has won a fight that can be likened to the Biblical story of Goliath versus David.

This was during the Swazi Tigers and Next Generation taekwondo championships held on Saturday at Bosco Skills Centre in Manzini. Sihlongonyane who is a blue belt holder defeated visiting Lesotho artist Lemohang Mokhobo who is a second Dan black belt.

Eswatini Taekwondo Association (ETA) Secretary Mbongeni ‘Ndo’ Sibandze said Sihlongonyane did well and he narrowly won the bout. He said it was a good showing for the local against the experienced Lesotho team, BothaBothe.
“We were happy to have a team from Lesotho (BothaBothe) participating in the tournament. This gave some of our local athletes a chance to compete against experienced senior athletes. One of them was Melusi Sihlongonyane who went all out to narrowly beat his opponent, Lemohang Mokhobo, in the finals after an added time of one minute. Sihlongonyane is a Blue Belt and Mokhobo is a second Dan Black Belt artist,” he said.

Sibandze said the championships were dominated by cadets and juniors as over 200 played. He said that was good as they were giving lot of attention to development.
“From that we can say the future looks bright for the sport after good showing by the juniors,” he said.

 Next Generation, who dominated the junior’s category, is one of the academies that is focused mainly on grassroots development and currently has about 30 registered athletes between the age of 5 and 15 years.
