LOBAMBA – Revenge is sweet!

Manzini Sundowns turned a 6-0 league defeat to a 1-0 slender win over Malanti Chiefs here yesterday in the EswatiniBank quarterfinals. Barely a week ago, had Malanti humiliated Sundowns 6-0 in a league game played at the former’s backyard at Killarney Stadium.  It was former Green Mamba striker Muhle Shiba whose first half strike ensured that the Ernest Mavuso-led charges advanced to the semi-finals of the 16th edition of the EswatiniBank sponsored tournament. Sundowns will join forces in Green Mamba, Young Buffaloes and Royal Leopard in the semi-finals. The winner stands to take home a whopping E1.1 million. Both teams started brightly but it was Sundowns who looked more dangerous going forward. Mbabane Highlanders former winger Sibusiso Mkhonta thought he had opened the deadlock for Sundowns but he saw his powerful shot saved by Malanti goalkeeper Xolani Gama in the 10 minutes.

The Raymond Dlamini-coached side responded four minutes later through Sandile Mazibuko, who scored a hat-trick in the previous encounter,  headed from close range but saw his shot saved by Sundowns goalkeeper Phila Mamba. The ‘Kappa Boys’ eventually broke the deadlock nine minutes before the half hour mark through Shiba. It was from a well-taken free-kick at the edge of the box after Mkhonta was fouled. The game went into the breather with Sundowns enjoying the one-goal cushion.
After resumption, the trailing side seemed to have found their spark. Right winger Sandile Mazibuko saw his glancing header hit the woodwork in the 50 minutes. Malanti striker Thokozani Dlamini, who got the nod in the first eleven because of Binwell Katinji’s suspension, almost came to scoring in the 55th minute but his volley from 40 yards was parried away for a fruitless corner.

Sundown captain Kingu Pemba was close to doubling the score but his tap-in was saved by Gama in the hour mark. Malanti got the last chance in the 89th minute but former Wits striker Papy Faty could have done better than head the ball out wide from close range. The over 100 Sundowns faithful were the happiest when referee Thulani Sibandze blew the final whistle, confirming the Kappa Boys into the last four.
