MBABANE – The country’s cyclists have been provided with an opportunity to test their resolve against Africa’s best.

Eswatini Cycling Association (ECA) got an invitation to send a team to a four-stage event styled Tour de Limpopo in South Africa between May 15 and 18 this year. It is an Africa Tour event and it is sanctioned by the International Cycling Union (UCI). ECA President Sihlangu Nhlabatsi confirmed the invitation.

According to a correspondence copied to both the cycling mother body and this publication, the race will start on Wednesday, May 15, and finish three days later.

“We’ll honour the invitation. We’re hoping to select the team after the National Championships on Sunday,” said Nhlabatsi.

faint-hearted

It is not for the faint-hearted, as long distances will be covered each day. On the final day, the daring cyclists will endure a 116km course.
“All riders and team support staff will be accommodated on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis from the evening of May 14, 2019 to the morning of May 19, 2019 (five nights).

“Transport to and from the event will be for the teams’ own costs,” read the correspondence in part.
The tour is dubbed as an event which showcases Limpopo as a premier cycling destination. It was launched last year and attracted 18 international professional teams. According to information sourced from the event’s official site, it will start at Bela Bela and head to Polokwane. It will end at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. Teams will race for general classification as well as king of the mountain and sprinters jerseys. The best young cyclist and most aggressive rider will also make stops on the podium to claim prizes.
