MBABANE – South Africa could come to COSAFA’s rescue following confusion surrounding the hosting of the regional tournament.

Zimbabwe was supposed to host the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Senior Challenge, but there was no green light from government. According to reports shared on various media platforms across the region yesterday, South Africa could yet again host the tournament after the regional body’s president Phillip Chiyangwa confirmed speculation in Durban this past weekend.  It is set for May 19 to June 1 this year.

“The COSAFA Cup is likely to be played here in South Africa.

“Please talk to Danny Jordaan (SAFA president) to get more information. Ask him, don’t waste time,” Chiyangwa was quoted saying by SunSport.
South Africa hosted the 2015, 2017 and 2018 editions.  Limpopo Province hosted last year’s edition. This year’s hosting province will only be announced once talks between COSAFA and the South African Football Association (SAFA) have concluded.

With Sihlangu failing to qualify for major tournaments, especially the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals, the COSAFA Cup is where they get to a chance to compete against other countries every year.  However, Sihlangu have failed to win a match in the regional showpiece since beating guest nation DR Congo by 1-0 in the 2016 edition in Namibia.
