LUSENGA BREAKS 400M RECORD
MBABANE – Sprinter Andile ‘Irish’ Lusenga displayed an astonishing performance to break the 400m national record with a time of 46:36 seconds.
He broke his own record on Saturday afternoon during the Gaborone International Meet held in Gaborone, Botswana.
The previous record was 46:43 seconds. Athletics Association of Eswatini (AAE) Secretary Thoba Mazibuko confirmed the good news yesterday.
“Another national record comes tumbling down as senior athlete Andile Lusenga produces an outstanding performance in the 400m in Gaborone. He was a marvel to watch and as expected he broke his own record,” he said.
excited
Lusenga said he was excited with his performance as it was his very first 400m in the season. He said his target was hitting the 45.04 seconds, the qualifying time for the IAAF World Athletics Championships billed for Qatar.
The Correctional Services athlete thanked his coach Maxwell Nkabinde for not giving up on him and also making sure that he stayed in the right shape.
Mazibuko said it was not a good day for sprinters Thandaza Zwane and Sebenele Dlamini.
Zwane was thrown into the deep end when he took the likes of world-class athletes in Botswana’s Isaac Makwala, Baboleki Thebe and Onkabetsi Nkobolo in the 400m. He clocked 47.33 seconds in his race.
Dlamini slipped from the blocks and he ended up finishing on 11.45 seconds in the 100m.
encourage
“The association is proud of the performances coming from the athletes and wishes to encourage them to push harder and qualify for the September World Championships in Qatar,” he said.
Lusenga is fresh from Lausanne, Switzerland where he was representing all sporting codes athletes in a three-day forum. The forum was basically looking at addressing athletes issues ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Lusenga was chosen by the Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) to represent the country.
