WE ARE READILY AVAILABLE – PARAMEDICS
MBABANE – After all has been said and done, the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) has broken the silence on how they operate.
This follows growing concerns by the football fraternity on why EMS personnel are not available at some of the Premier League games. The EMS is one of the key stakeholders in professional leagues. In a proper set-up, there must be an ambulance, medical personnel, medical equipment, including mobile clinics and stadium doctor.
EMS Communications Officer Wandile Mthembu has come out to say that their services were available on request.
“We normally avail our services without request during games of high magnitude. We voluntarily go to games of sporting codes where we know there will be a huge crowd. We also provide our services during national events, not only soccer but cycling, boxing, reed dance and school games,” Mthembu said.
“That said, we should be mindful of the fact that we have limited resources at our disposal. In all the 24 stations that we have, there should be an ambulance but you find that some stations do not have ambulances because they are in garages for mechanical reasons. That is when we have to prioritise on assignments that we cover because we do not have enough resources,” he added. He emphasised that never at any point did they not honour a Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) request.
“Whenever PLE has requested our services, we have always availed them. However, in some instances, we are appealing to PLE to work with us in harmony. In some cases, you will find that the team officials block us from entering the stadium when we have volunteered to offer our services in a game of high magnitude,” he said.
He also highlighted the challenges that they face in their line of duty.
“We have received threats from some teams suspecting that we are being used by some teams for muti purposes. Our personnel are neutral and are only there to provide services as they are well-oriented in their services,” he added.
