IMPRESSIVE U-10S TURNOUT
MATSAPHA – The Eswatini National Tennis Association (ENTA) was yesterday highly impressed by the turnout of the Under-10s during the first Swaziland Building Society (SBS) Juniors Tennis Tournament of the new season.
This follows SBS’s increased sponsorship for tennis juniors for the 2019/20 season to E140 000, an increase of E20 000 from last season’s E120 000 package.
As it was highlighted during the sponsorship launch at Mountain Inn that a large chunk would be directed to development, ENTA viewed the Under-10s impressive turnout as directly in line with this objective.
ENTA President Maxwell Jele was present during the tournament at the University of Eswatini (UNESWA), Kwaluseni Campus Tennis Courts.
The association’s Secretary, Nqaba Mkhaliphi, said the Under-10s’ impressive turnout showed the zeal for children to play tennis.
“This is what we want; the commendable numbers of the Under-10s during the first tournament of the season. We are confident and expect a significant increase during the course of the year,” he said.
integral category
The secretary said the Under-10s were an integral category of the juniors’ structure as they automatically become the feeding source for the Under-12s group.
“It became a challenge in the past to maintain the Under-12 juniors as we had no base,” he said.
Mkhaliphi further highlighted that the ENTA was very appreciative to schools that are collaborating with the association to have their pupils participate during these tournaments.
Schools which had some of their pupils taking part during the tournament included Living Waters Primary, Mhlume Primary School, Khanyisile and Siyakhula, among others.
“We do have other categories which include the Under-14s and 18s but too many children came to partake in the Under-10s. This shows that we will work well with development this year,” the secretary said.
He added that they encouraged other schools to partake in the sport and make it part of their curriculum.
The tournament will finish today and best performers will be awarded with trophies and medals.
