MBABANE – Talk about being money-makers. Newly-crowned MTN Premier League champions Green Mamba as well as Ingwenyama and EswatiniBank Cup winners Young Buffaloes meant business in the recently-ended 2018/19 campaign.

The two sides top the earnings charts after sharing a total E4.33 million in prize money. Buffaloes are on top after reaping a total of E2.85 million. The latter’s biggest winning was the E1.3 million they got for winning the Ingwenyama Cup. In the EswatiniBank Cup, MTN League and EswatiniTelecom Charity Cup, they earned E1.1 million, E350 000 and E100 000, in that order.

Despite setbacks in EswatiniBank Cup and MTN Premier League, where they finished as runners; Royal Leopard are also in the picture. The police outfit are fifth on the earnings charts after raking in about E1.1 million.

In essence, the three security forces sides in Buffaloes, Leopard, and Green Mamba are sharing about E5.4 million in prize money. Total prize money up for grabs for teams in the past season was about E10.4 million.   Green Mamba CEO Thami Phakathi attributed the success to a combination of factors, especially hard work and a collaborated vision.

“We have the best team, technical bench and a workaholic management committee which ensured the vision to win the league was pursued to the last game.
“The players were committed to the call. They worked hard and remained resolute even when the odds were heavily stacked against us in the league run,” he said.

Efforts to get comments from Buffaloes Acting CEO Thando ‘Va’ Nxumalo were fruitless, as his phone rang unanswered. Meanwhile, Mbabane Swallows, who ruled in the past two seasons, may be licking their wounds, but they still have something to smile about. Their total prize money for the season is about E1.4 million. This means they are third on the winnings charts.

A lion’s share of the money was generated in the EswatiniTelecom Charity Cup at the beginning of the season when they beat Mbabane Highlanders by 2-1 in the decider to pocket E1 million.

Mbabane Highlanders, on the other hand, made slightly over E1 million after finishing as runners-up in both the Charity and the Ingwenyama Cup tournaments.  In the league, the ‘Black Bull’ have ranked fifth and are entitled to E100 000.
Worth mentioning is that teams that owe the Premier League of Eswatini will not get their prize money in full.
