MBABANE – EmaSwati will get a radio broadcast of the upcoming COSAFA Cup.

The Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Principal Secretary (PS), Maxwell Masuku, has allayed fears that the 2019 Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Cup will not be broadcast on national radio, the Eswatini Broadcasting and Information Services (EBIS)

This follows information brought to the attention of the sports desk that the station will not be sending a crew to broadcast the games where the national team Sihlangu will be participating.
The regional showpiece, to be staged in Durban, South Africa is expected to start on Saturday, May 25 to June 8. Sihlangu will be up against Mauritius and Comoros Islands as these are the countries which are in the same group as the locals following the withdrawal of Angola at the eleventh hour that were also in the same group.

“As far as I am aware, a crew from the radio station will be travelling to cover the international assignment,” said the PS.

misleading

He said it was news to him that the radio station would not be covering the COSAFA games and highlighted that those who had shared such information probably had an ulterior motive aimed at misleading the nation.
“All I know is that preparations to have the EBIS crew travel to Durban for the tournament are ongoing. Who has stopped them from going there?,” he asked rhetorically.
Masuku disclosed that they had no reason to stop the station from having a crew travel to South Africa to cover the tournament. “What I can tell you is that we have spoken with the EBIS director to have a budget prepared for the international assignment. The minutes are then to be taken to cabinet for discussion and approval,” said the PS.

He reiterated that is was not true that the radio station would not have a crew to broadcast the games.
Sources at the station have alleged that the station was reluctant to have international assignments covered and it was not just limited to football but all sporting codes. The sources also disclosed that the station had grown to be reluctant in broadcasting soccer games that take place at night, despite their importance.
EBIS Director Martin Dlamini could not be drawn for comment as he was reportedly in a meeting for the better part of yesterday.
