SIHLANGU’S COSAFA LIFELINE!
MBABANE – It’s now a much easier draw for the national team, Sihlangu in the 2019 Cosafa Cup after the withdrawal of Angola yesterday.
The Kostadic Papic side was to face Angola in the opening game on Saturday in Group A that also comprises Comoros and Mauritius.
Sihlangu will now play Mauritius on Saturday at King Zwelithini Stadium, kick-off 4:30pm. Sihlangu is ranked better than its group opponents.
They stand at 143 while Comoros is ranked 147 and Mauritius stands at 156, according to the FIFA rankings released on April 4.
Angola were favourites to make it to the quarter-finals by topping the group as they will also be playing in the Africa Cup of Nations, but now Sihlangu remains favourites to reach the quarter-finals as they will only face lower ranked Comoros and Mauritius.
regrets
“COSAFA regrets to announce the withdrawal of Angola with the Palancas Negras citing the need to complete their league season and preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations as the reasons.
“The short notice has placed COSAFA Cup organisers in a tight spot and despite canvasing far and wide across the continent for a replacement, the timeframe simply did not allow for a new participant with the tournament to get under way in Durban this weekend,” reads a statement from cosafa.
The winner of the group that comprises Sihlangu, Mauritius and Comoros will face Zimbabwe in the quarter-final. Sihlangu will tackle Comoros on May 27 (next Monday), at 5pm at the King Zwelithini Stadium.
Group A will be completed with a match between Comoros and Mauritius next Thursday.
Three-times winners Angola have missed two previous COSAFA Cup tournaments – the very first one in 1997 and also four years in 2015.
Camp
Sihlangu is currently in camp that started on Sunday and they will leave the country tomorrow. Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe also confirmed yesterday.
Sihlangu coach Kostadic Papic did not respond to a text sent to him last night and he will field questions from the media this afternoon during the team’s open training session at Mavuso Sports Centre.
