MATSAPHA – The second edition of the University of Eswatini’s (UNESWA) Wellness Day was a ‘blast’.
The event was celebrated yesterday at UNESWA, Kwaluseni Campus in Matsapha.

Participants included representatives from the Ministry of Health, UNESWA stakeholders, sponsors and Somnjalose High School marching band and cheer leaders that thrilled the crowd with entertainment.
The first edition of the event was held in April 2018 and according to UNESWA Vice Chancellor Professor Justice Thwala, it was decided that they made it an annual event.

“May I extend special gratitude to our stakeholders and partners who have journeyed with us since the inception of the Health and Wellness concept last year. I wish to thank the UNESWA Task Team for organising this event, including all the donors who supported us. The presence of pupils and teachers from Somnjalose High School was highly appreciated,” said Thwala.

The professor explained that the focus of the Health and Wellness programme at UNESWA was to have a strong staff and students, as the nation progressed towards King Mswati III’s vision of a healthy and successful nation.
“The theme of this day is ‘Wellness and You’. Wellness, as defined by the National Wellness Institution, is ‘an active process of becoming aware of more successful existence’. The term is also defined as ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of diseases or infirmity,” added Thwala.

He emphasised that UNESWA’s mandate was to assist all staff members and students to realise the importance of improving all dimensions of wellness.
Participants were also taught about lifestyle precautions on how to improve certain behaviours.

These included promoting positive lifestyle changes, identifying and curbing health risks such as unhealthy eating habits, managing finances through budgeting and subsequently limiting stress and depression.
Physical activities and games for the day were the marching band, aerobics, tug-of-war, sack race, egg race, netball and combo relays.
Winners from the various games and activities were awarded with medals and trophies.

Academic Director Lindiwe Nhlabatsi was the champion in the ladies administrators’ egg race and walked away with a gold medal.
