IT’S MOTIVATION FOR COSAFA – ‘SAVIOLA’
MANZINI – He was so euphoric but did not forget to attribute it all to his teammates, coaches and national team coach Kostadin Papic.
That is Ingwenyama Cup 2019 Player of the Series Sandile ‘Saviola’ Gamedze of Young Buffaloes, the eventual champions, after beating Mbabane Highlanders 4-1 in this year’s final.
Speaking on his Player of the Series gong last night, Gamedze was so excited and grateful for the honours.
“I am so grateful and honestly excited about it all. I want to give it to my teammates and coaches who always encouraged and believed in me. I must hasten to add that I also learnt a lot in the short while I have been with Papic at Sihlangu and can say we’re improving by being there and back to our teams,” he said.
Gamedze said the awards came at the right moment as he knew the nation was expecting a lot from him and his Sihlangu teammates in the COSAFA Castle Cup. The annual regional tournament starts this Saturday in Durban whereby Eswatini will be up against Mauritius at 4:30pm at King Zwelithini Stadium.
“I’m certainly motivated and my wish is to do well for the country. I can promise we’ll do our best,” he said.
He also said it was important for them to do well especially because there were scouts in the tournament for international opportunities. Gamedze pocketed E15 000 for the Player of the Series award while also taking home E10 000 for the Top Goal Scorer, totalling E25 000.
His teammate, Nhlanhla Gwebu also won E10 000 for Best Goalkeeper. The latter also expressed his joy and said this was quite a tournament for him and his team. “I’m so happy to win this award and to be champions with my team. I recall my best game here was against Manzini Sundowns as I saved two penalties,” he said.
He said those saves took them to the final otherwise Sundowns were a very a tough rival for them bhut luckily they knocked them out.
