OVER 100 AT OYAMA NATIONAL TOURNEY
MANZINI – It was by far the least attendance in any Oyama Kyokushinkaikan Karate event in a long time.
Nonetheless, it still was as lively as usual as the juniors showed determination to outfox their seniors at the Salesian High School Hall yesterday. Over 100 artists from different parts of Eswatini competed in the tournament, including a few from Ashihara Karate. Vulamasango School Dojo (Club)from Correctional Services once again led by example in terms of attendance and dress code.
Tournament
A few parents had also come to the tournament and enjoyed every bit of it while others, especially the mothers, would be seen covering their faces in disbelief and shock as the artists exchanged high and powerful kicks also called ‘drop-dead’ kicks by some of the seniors. “It’s a successful tournament for us because we understand it came at a time when most of our athletes had exams while it’s also winter, a time where others decide to shun training so they’re not here,” explained Shihan Lucky Thomo.
Appreciated
He said they appreciated the fact that while the numbers were relatively low, almost every Dojo was represented either by juniors or seniors. At the time of compiling this report, the tournament was still in its elimination stages, the quarter-finals only starting way after 2pm whereby the heavyweights also started fighting. Some of the stars in heavyweight section included World Cup stars in black belts Linda Dlamini and Sibhamu Mngometulu, among others.
