NHLANGANO – With more years, it just gets better. This is after the Eswatini Royal Insurance Corporation (ESRIC) increased their sponsorship for this year’s Scara Thindwa Foundation Under-13s schools soccer tournament by E2 000.

This was witnessed yesterday during the launch of the tournament at the King Sobhuza II Stadium in Nhlangano. The sponsorship was increased from E208 000 to E210 000.

The country’s giant insurance company has always shown commitment over the past few years in supporting this initiative.
Last year, the sponsorship increased from the previous year’s E170 000 package to E208 000 which was an additional sponsorship of E38 000.
Representing ESRIC during the function was Marketing and Communications Manager Sizwe Shongwe. Also present was the founder of the initiative, who is former Kaizer Chiefs legend Absalom ‘Scara’ Thindwa and his assistant Guy Ngosi.

Chairman of Scara Thindwa Soccer Foundation Pastor David Mathse of FOG Church International applauded the inclusion of girls in the programme.
He also appreciated the strategic launch of the programme as they aimed to have it revolve across all the country’s regions.

“The idea to strategically launch in all the country’s regions is a brilliant thought for all the pupils in Eswatini to get to understand what the Scara Thindwa Foundation was all about,” said the pastor. Mathse also made emphasis on the fact that the programme aimed at unearthing young talent as they aimed at assisting talented youngsters to make their way into professional football.

“We conduct workshops where we equip our scouts on the skill to identify and develop talented children,” said the chairman.
“We are also ecstatic over the inclusion of girls in this programme,” he said. Meanwhile, Thindwa told pupils from Evelyn Baring and Lulakeni Primary Schools, who had attended the launch, that they must work extra hard to differ from the rest.

“At times I would train alone at your age for me to be a better player than the rest,” he said. ‘Scara’ said this generation was lucky as even girls were awarded the same opportunities as their male counterparts. He made an example of the 2019 Women World Cup held in France to indicate the importance of a girl child’s inclusion in soccer development, as it was now a cross gender sport. Thindwa joined Chiefs in 1985 and played until 1992.
