MBABANE – Eswatini’s special vehicle drivers John ‘Mashesha’ Thomson and Clinton ‘Masondo’ McNamara are celebrating a top three finish in the torturous Toyota 1000 Desert Race (TDR).

The MORMOND duo competing in a Zarco Challenger was in Selebi Phikwe, Botswana, since Friday for round three of the South African National Cross Country Series (SACCS). After the final leg of the 1 000km event yesterday, they ranked third overall in the A Class. It was a big leap, as they had finished ranked fifth overall the previous day. ‘Masondo’ confirmed the latest developments yesterday.

The full final classification results and finishing times were yet to be released at the time of compiling this report late yesterday.
‘Masondo’ was a navigator for ‘Mashesha’, who was the driver. Usual navigator and partner Maurice Zermatten was abroad until yesterday when he finally took to the desert.

The team’s journey began in the 60km qualifying race on Friday. This event determined the starting order for the following day.
A total of 440 kilometres awaited the Eswatini pair and the rest of the teams on Saturday and the race got underway at 8:15am when the leading vehicle left the Sam Sono Soccer Stadium in Selebi-Phikwe.
Yesterday, the final racing section consisting of approximately 400 kilometres, started at 8:15am.
