40 RACES FOR ‘MASHESHA’ IN SA CHAMPS
MBABANE – They had more reasons to be merry after conquering the Toyota Botswana 1 000 Desert Race on Sunday.
That is the story of special vehicle competitors John ‘Mashesha’ Thomson and Maurice Zermatten, who are fresh from round three of the South African National Cross Country Series (SACCS) in Selebi Phikwe in Botswana. On top of a third place finish in the Class A category; the duo celebrated clocking 40 races in the championship.
After being held up in a business trip in Switzerland, South Africa-based Zermatten only raced with ‘Mashesha’ on the last day of the three-day championship in Botswana. Helping ‘Mashesha’ as an extra navigator in the first two days of the 1 000km course was Clinton ‘Masondo’ McNamara.
‘Masondo’ confirmed the milestone when sought for his reaction on the race in Botswana.
“It was a very tough race. It was tight, twisty and narrow with no space for overtaking.
“It was a successful weekend, which marked 40 races for John and Maurice. Finally it’s a race with no complications,” he said.
Thomson/Zermatten could only finish the third and final day at the TDR 1000 last year but it was mission accomplished this time around after having a flawless outing.
The TDR 1 000 started on Friday with a 60km qualifying race that determined the starting order for the following day. A total of 880 kilometres awaited the teams last Saturday and Sunday.
Round four to be staged between August 2 and August 3 this year will lead the adventurous competitors to Bronkhorstspruit in South Africa’s Gauteng Province. It will be a 400km event.
