EX-PIRATES STAR ‘TSO’ WANTS ‘LANDERS’ JOB
MBABANE – Former Orlando Pirates and South African national team Bafana Bafana’s star Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi is the latest to show interest in the vacant coaching post at Mbabane Highlanders.
Highlanders advertised the post last week with the deadline last Sunday and a few emaSwati are said to have sent their applications while most are from outside the country.
Vilakazi is well known, in the country and is Orlando Pirates all-time top scorer, who has also won major awards in his country.
He confirmed his interest in the job on deadline day after being in touch with one former Eswatini international who advised him about the post.
However, information from Highlanders is that Vilakazi’s interest was welcome but his application was a day late. “The deadline was on Sunday,” said the team’s Head of Communications and Secretariat Gcina Dlamini, when asked about him.

However, Dlamini would not say the application was dismissed, instead said they would be working on all applications in due course. He made it succinctly clear that revealing names at this stage would be premature.
Dlamini had been quoted as saying only few local coaches showed interest while confirming former Free State Stars player and National First Division League side Super Eagles coach Thabo Mashego as one of the foreign applicants.
Vilakazi has a CAF B licence which he recently obtained from South Africa Football Association (SAFA) and is waiting for his coaching certificate from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
He has not coached major sides yet but juniors and Malanti Chiefs as player/coach back in 2011 as well as Orange Vaal Professionals where he was head coach in 2016/17.
He also confirmed his interest and that he got to know about the post through a friend in the country.
Nonetheless, Highlanders require CAF A licence for its head coach and international football contemporary trends, among other attributes which even touch on ethical behaviour and evaluation of players’ fitness and social behaviour.
