KHANYISILE 2019 FESTIVAL CHAMPS
MBABANE – Khanyisile Primary School pupils are the masters of the mind games.
They were crowned champions of the 2019 Schools’ Chess Festival after accumulating 42.5 points, topping all other five participating schools.
Sifundzani were the runners-up and the results were confirmed by Eswatini Chess Federation (ECF) Tournament Director William Siame.
“Living waters Pre-school was on Saturday packed to the rafters as over 60 young chess players showed up to play the royal game. The festival which dates back to 1995, was this year represented by six schools,” he said.
Five rounds were played using the round robin (RR) system with the universal time control of 30 minutes per round. Khanyisile Primary School took an early lead after 3 rounds, tightly followed by Sifundzani in second.
Missing
Defending champions Montessori had an unpleasant tournament with some key players missing.
However, it was the 2014 winners, Khanyisile, who showed an ascendible appetite and went on to win the last two rounds as they amassed 42.5 points.
Despite winning all the last two rounds games, Sifundzani were still short of 1.5 points to level up with the winners and had to settle for second position on 41 points.
The bronze medal went to the host Living waters School on 32 points.
Siame added that’, Arbiters in Sikhanyiso Sihlongonyane and Mbongeni Mabuza were satisfied with the quality of chess that was displayed, especially in the A section and also insisted that come next year, chess clocks and notation should be introduced.
