DENVER ‘SUN-SETS’ ON SEA BIRDS
NHLANGANO – All in one hour!
Denver Sundowns recorded their first win of the 2019/20 MTN Premier League in style – netting four times within 60 minutes, as they stunned neighbours Manzini Sea Birds yesterday.
They shot to a 4-2 win after scoring three within 45 minutes without getting any response. It was almost a done deal for Sundowns, who came back to nail a fourth within 15 minutes into the second half before Sea Birds got their first five minutes later and a second five minutes from time. The Anthony Mdluli-led charges had their good chances, which they failed to bury in the first half with one set piece from about 12 yards by Gcinizwi Dlamini but his effort was well collected by the opposition goalie, Felizwe Vilakati.
Dominant force
Otherwise, it was Denver who were the dominant force with Mxolisi Bhembe opening the score sheet at only four minutes into the game, through a nicely delivered cross by full-back Mkhuleko Magagula which he nodded home to put his side on the lead. Denver’s second goal came through the boot of Enzo Motsa, who beat Bafana Ngwenya from the penalty spot after a foul on him by the latter. Linda Maphalala ensured a comfortable lead for Christopher Ennin’s men when he added a third in the first minute of stoppage time before the break.
Denver continued to exert pressure as opposed to defending, after the breather with Sea Birds returning a much better side in as far as defending was concerned.
It was now an end-to-end game either side was bound to score and Sea Birds did just that in the half-hour mark through Maphalala, completing his brace to also record their first victory in seven matches this season. Sea Birds, who had just stunned Manzini Wanderers with a 1-0 defeat, drew 0-0 with Mbabane Highlanders and got their two goals from brace hero Mthokozisi Gwebu in the 65th and 85th minutes respectively. It was nearly five for Sundowns but Sphamandla Maseko watched his effort rattle the woodwork from long range in the last 10 minutes.
In the end, it was Sundowns’ day to celebrate.
