‘BIRDS’ 4 POINTS CLEAR
NHLANGANO – Young and talented midfielder, Nhlanhla Ngwenya, as his name is translated in English as luck was indeed the ‘lucky’ charm for Mbabane Swallows.
His second half solitary strike was enough for the red and white glamour outfit to collect maximum points against gallant Moneni Pirates, yesterday during their 2019/20 MTN Premier League first round encounter. The win took them four points clear of second-placed Royal Leopard, who have a date with Mbabane Highlanders this afternoon at Mavuso Sports Centre.
The youngster nodded home a brilliantly crafted Sandile Hlatjwako delivery from the left flank to beat the ‘Sea Robbers’ goalkeeper Igidimba Romanus at the far lower corner against the run of play, to hand his side that important lead.
Good game
Hlatjwako also had a good game with the assist after scoring four goals against Pigg’s Peak Black Swallows last weekend. Pirates were unlucky on the day, as they were the side attacking more from referee Mbongeni Shongwe’s first whistle. In actual fact, they dominated the first half but the Honour Janza-led side were the side that was able to find the back of the net just two minutes after the recess. The ‘Buccaneers’ of Moneni tried to find the equaliser until the end of the game but all was in vain.
Remain at the summit
The win for Swallows means they remain at the summit of the elite league log, with 19 points after seven games played with six wins and one draw. The first great chance for the home side came 35 minutes into the game but Tony ‘TT’ Tsabedze’s effort was parried off play by Igidimba for Paito Dube to miss a glorious chance from the corner taken by ‘TT’. A number of the referee’s decisions were unsatisfactory to Pirates’ supporters, including a decision not to award a penalty when Lizwe Zwane was challenged by Igidimba on a one-on-one encounter inside the box and Shongwe waved play-on with the supporters openly protesting. Pirates played great carpet football which Swallows’ defenders had a tough time dealing with, but stood firm to protect the lead until the final whistle. Judging from Pirates’ performance, they will feel hard done by the defeat as a point would have been fair.
