MSHIKISHI SHINES IN 3.3KM RACE
LOBAMBA – Local music legend Mshikishi Mndzebele was among the best performers at the Imbube Marathon.
The former SWAMA president, who is now 65 years old, managed a fourth place finish in the 3.3km males’ category.
Mndzebele clocked 0:13:29 seconds in this category reserved for persons aged 60 and above, and for people with disabilities.
The musician said he was a health enthusiast and exercise formed part of his day-to-day living.
“It is very important to keep fit for health reasons. The process of growing old is delayed and one can hardly catch any illness,” said Mndzebele.
He also indicated that he ran very well on the day but could not meet his target of obtaining the first position.
“I was disturbed by a sharp pain, which made it difficult for me to maintain my speed,” he said.
Meanwhile, John Magagula felt hard done by the score keepers after he was named as second place yet he strongly believed that he had obtained the first position of this category.
“They say I was placed second position yet I was the first to arrive for this category. The marshals even gave me a rose to signify that I was the winner and congratulate me,” said the obviously upset elderly man. The champion of this category was Christopher Thwala.
On another note, 69-year-old Elizabeth Magongo was the winner of the ladies’ category.
“I had not prepared for this one; I just went to participate with the aim to win. Last year I obtained second position,” she said.
She encouraged elderly people to exercise as she said it had many health benefits.
