LOBAMBA – A photo finish by South Africa’s Bonginkosi Mavuso earned him the 2019 Imbube Marathon title after 2:28:58 hours.

The Nedbank athlete shocked many when he crossed the first line first having outpaced local athletes in Swazi Slojos’ Sifiso Ngcobo and Sifiso Ndaba, who led for about 36km. The duo failed to make it to the top three with South Africans dominating the race.

Ngcobo, who won the FSRA Marathon in August on his debut in a marathon, was favorite to win the race as he led from the start and reached the top of Malagwane Hill in front by about a kilometre only to be left behind in the last 6km.

Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) Amos Tfwala was the first liSwati to cross the finish line despite having one athlete disqualified having failed to adhere to the rules. Tfwala earned E30 000 for finishing first among the locals.

UEDF Sifiso Sibandze, who won the race for two consecutive times in 2016 and 2017 was among the title contenders in the race but he threw the towel with less than 5km remaining while last year’s first liSwati Thulani ‘Lion’ Ngubane came in a disappointing position 52 attributing his failure to a muscle pull along the way.
