SIMPLE DIET FOR IMBUBE MARATHON CHAMP
LOBAMBA – Imbube Marathon champion, Bonginkosi Mavuso, did not need a special and expensive diet to win the celebrated race on Sunday.
The 23-year-old from Nedbank South Africa clocked a golden and record time of 02:28:58 hours to win the 42.2km event at Somhlolo National Stadium. Mavuso, who was a runner-up in the half marathon last year, said he opted for light digestible foods a day before the race after cutting out red meat.
“I avoided junk a week leading up to the race and had an increased intake of fruits and vegetables. I just had a small sandwich a day before the race,” he said.
For training, Mavuso said he trained by climbing and hiking in preparation for the torturous Malagwane Hill.
“I did my homework and studied the route very carefully. I was not shaken when I trailed during the early stages of the race,” he said.
It was not Mavuso’s first win in the country. Early this year, he won the Jabulisa Foundation Marathon in Pigg’s Peak.
Meanwhile, seasoned runner and Golden Foot Chairperson Tokky Hou celebrated her fourth straight podium finish in the 42.2km event. She was third in the masters’ category (age 50-59) with a time of 04:59:52 hours to get E1 500. She said she targeted to feature in six more 42.2km events with the hope of getting a permanent number.
Elphas Ngcamphalala, on the other hand, was the master champion in the male category with a time of 03:34:03 hours. He got E3 000.
