CHAN DREAM UP IN SMOKE
MBABANE – It seems Sihlangu head coach Kostadin Papic’s call for a revised contract is justified.
This publication has established that Papic is paid less than most of his counterparts in the 14-member Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) region. Reports suggest Papic gets E85 000 gross salary per month and he wants it increased.
Most of the coaches in the region get over E100 000 per month, with South Africa reportedly paying a minimum E490 000 monthly for a national team coach. Countries like Angola and Zambia, according to this publication’s correspondents, pay between E247 500 and E369 468, in that order.
Countries offering a ‘less attractive offer’ include Zimbabwe and Madagascar whose coaches get E115 500 each. Namibia also offers about E82 502.
contract negotiations
With about 70 days left before the expiring of the current one-year deal for the Sihlangu coach, contractual negotiations between Papic and the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) are still not finalised. On Tuesday this week during a media day, Papic told journalists that he was open to offers if he got a good deal.
“I will be accepting offers from other clubs now. I still have a contract though to finish with my employers. I believe I will discuss more of the contract issues upon our return from Zambia but for now we are focusing on the game. I also believe that maybe the talks will also resume after the results from Zambia,” he said on Tuesday.
EFA Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe always cites the confidentially clause when sought for comment on issues regarding coaches’ salaries and players’ allowances.
Meanwhile, Papic has led the side in 10 official matches, including yesterday’s setback in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) final round decider against Zambia. Sihlangu proved gallant yesterday as they drew 2-2 but eventually lost 3-2 on aggregate following the 0-1 loss at home last month. The Serbia-born gaffer’s major achievement was steering the national outfit to the final round of the CHAN qualifiers ahead of Malawi and Angola.
