SIX-MONTH BREAK FOR SIHLANGU
MBABANE – Sihlangu have enough time to pick up the pieces following an unwanted record in 2019.
The 1-4 loss to visiting Senegal in Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at Mavuso Sports Centre was Kostadin Papic’s men last official match for the year. They have played 13 games, which are headlined by five defeats. Following shock elimination in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in September, Sihlangu will not be in action until the 2020 Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Cup, which is likely to be played in May.
This means Sihlangu will not play competitive football for about six months. Countries that are still in the race to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup will be back in action in March next year. Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Marketing and Communications Manager Muzi Radebe also confirmed the long break.
“We’ll wait for the technical team to share their programme for the break,” said Radebe.
Meanwhile, Sihlangu’s AFCON qualifying campaign will resume with back-to-back fixtures against Congo early in September 2020. The first game will be away. The following month Sihlangu will host Guinea-Bissau before the last qualifying match away in Senegal in November. The two top after the qualifiers will get tickets to the AFCON finals in Cameroon.
