MBABANE – Believe it or not, Eswatini rugby is among the top 100 world’s best.

In actual fact, Eswatini men’s rugby has been rated by the World Rugby Union as the 91st best in the world.
This is according to the latest rankings of the men’s world rugby released by the union on December 2, 2019.

A total of 105 countries active in rugby were ranked by the world association. The rankings were released immediately after last year’s rugby world cup hosted by Japan and won by neighbouring South Africa. The latter are ranked the world’s best on first position, followed by New Zealand.

African countries ranked better than Eswatini include world cup participants Namibia on position 23, Kenya 32, Zimbabwe 35, Tunisia 39, and Uganda 40 among others. Those ranked below Eswatini include Mauritius 93, Rwanda 95 and Cameroon 99.

Eswatini Rugby Union (ERU) Secretary Bonginkhosi Dlamini thanked the World Rugby Union for the recognition and said the ranking was as a result of their international participation last year.

“We participated in international tournaments in Mozambique and Lesotho. This means the new executive is working and this is a starting point,” he said.
He added that what boosted Eswatini the most was their participation at the South Regions Rugby Tournament in Lesotho as they last had an activity in 2017.
“This gives us responsibility to push for a better ranking and surely, the 3 Nations Tournament involving Mozambique and Lesotho for now will give us a better milestone,” he said.

The secretary also highlighted that they wanted to be more active with both juniors and the seniors despite having missed the 2020 Japan Olympics Qualifications due to past challenges.
