MBABANE – It was an embarrassing moment when Pigg’s Peak Black Swallows’ goalkeeper, Friday Lukhele, started the match without gloves.

He was forced to makes saves with his bare hands, for the about 10 minutes of the game against Manzini Wanderers, an unusual scenario in the game of football. Black Swallows went on to lose the MTN Premier League match 2-4 to continue staying put in the relegation quagmire.

Law 4 of FIFA’s Laws of the Game requires that a goalie’s equipment should be distinctive from the rest of the players and officials.

Wearing of soccer gloves is not mandated by the game laws but goalkeepers almost everywhere use gloves to protect their hands from injury and improve grip on the ball.

Lukhele conceded two goals before the gloves were handed to him by Manager Busta Vilakati after a request from the referee Mbongeni Shongwe.
Lukhele went on to concede four goals from Manzini Wanderers with Mike Dombo scoring a hat-trick while Manqoba ‘Spider’ Maseko netted the opener.

Black Swallows will be out of action for the next two weeks as they were booted out of the Ingwenyama Cup in the Last 32 matches. They are second at the bottom of the league with 10 points after 14 games.
