TAWANANYASHA CHESS CHAMP

MBABANE – At a young age, she has proven to be a phenomenal chess master.

That is 12-year-old prodigy from Khanyisile Primary School, Tawananyasha Manomano. She emerged victorious in the development section of the Manzini Open played over the weekend.
A total number of 20 children from across the kingdom attended the tournament that was held at FEA School in Helemisi, on Saturday and yesterday. The six rounds Swiss format system was used. According to Tournament Director William Siame, Manomano scored 5/6 and the only dent was a loss to a third placed Aphelele Ndlangamandla from the fourth round.

“Having scored the same number of points with Tawananyasha, Mayenzeke Maseko came second because of the quality of victories. The organisers of the Manzini Open were pleased with the turnout in the development section and thanked the parents who accompanied their children.  It is encouraging to see parents supporting little ones to get involved in the mind game,” said Siame. The Open Section which was still ongoing with Kuda Bayani from Botswana leading the section after round four and in second place was the Zambian WFM Lorita Mwango. Manomano walked away with a gold medal plus a trophy and a chess set.

Siame said the youngster promised to go home and practice more.  She said chess helped her a lot at school as she obtained position one in class (Grade V), according to the director. Mayenzeke Maseko got a silver medal and a chess set.  Siame said Maseko also praised chess for his outstanding performance in his grade where he scored a merit. Aphelele Ndlangamadla went home with a bronze medal and a chess set. Siame added that the young girl, all the way from Nhlangano, was over the moon when she came third; the director said she loved chess and had asked her mother to buy her chess books.
