MBABANE – Talk about a great start to 2020. Fresh from securing a European card for 2020 in Spain, ace golfer Nobuhle Dlamini has returned to maintain her cutting edge closer to home.

The Lobamba-born golfer has fired an impressive 67 to lead with four-under-par 140 in the ongoing Cape Town Ladies Open. The 27-year-old is at the 5 622 metres course at King David Mowbray Golf Club in Cape Town, South Africa, alongside ‘big guns’ from the US,  France and Scotland, among other countries, for the three-day event that got underway on Wednesday. She is in pursuit of a share from a E200 000 purse in the first Sunshine   Ladies Tour (SLT) event of the new year.

Results posted on the official SLT website showed that Dlamini was a stroke clear of his closest challenger and round one leader Lee-Anne Pace, who is the top-ranked golfer in Africa.  Pace is also a nine-time Ladies European Tour (LET) champion. The latter fired a 69 yesterday to set up a photo finish in today’s decider.

“I was driving the ball really well at the start of the round, but definitely felt myself fading on the back nine,” Dlamini had said after round one.
Challenging for the top spot in Cape Town is welcome change for Dlamini.  Despite a phenomenal 2019, she had struggled in the Mother City in the past year to rank 10th.

In this season of the SLT series, Dlamini is in the spotlight after making history last year to win more than a treble. She was a champion in the Dimension Data Ladies Challenge, Jo’burg Open and the Royal Swazi Investec Open, among other events.

Even though the European Tour events will provide a bigger purse (over E286m) for Dlamini, the SLT is where she gets to establish herself ahead of the bigger challenge overseas. Next Tuesday she will compete for an increased prize money (E400 000) in the SuperSport Ladies Challenge in South Africa.
