MBABANE – He is one of the top performing students in the country.

St Mark’s High School pupil and cricket player Sibonelelo Luhlelo, who got aggregate seven in the Form V examinations known as Eswatini General Certificate in Secondary Education (EGCSE) and Prevocational Examinations (PREVOC), is a role model to other junior cricket players. He was listed among the top performing students in the country and is ready to conquer the world.

Luhlelo attributed his excellence to dedication and focus. The young man, who plays for St Mark’s Cricket team and Cricket Mbabane, is not only a gem in academics but also a key player in his teams. He was also selected to join the Under-17 cricket national team that competed in the World Cup Qualifiers in 2018. When asked on how he managed to balance between academics and playing cricket, Luhlelo said he played cricket during the first two school terms and took a break to focus on his studies in the third term.

“I owe my success to hard work, focus and dedication. There is time for everything in life and I found a balance between my schoolwork and playing cricket. The most important thing is to give it your all as if your life depended on it and I applied that mentality in class and in the field. I am over the moon and currently doing A-Level at St Mark’s. I will continue playing cricket and make it to the national team once again,” said Luhlelo.

Mbabane Cricket team head coach Delisa Malinga, who is also the Vice President of Eswatini Cricket Association, congratulated Luhlelo on his achievement and encouraged other cricket players to follow suit. He said excellent results were a norm for cricket players, mentioning that the sport involved a lot of calculations, thus promoting mental capacity.

“He is a role model to other younger players and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours. Every year we have top students from our team and they continue to shine even in university. We recently celebrated Sboniso Dlamini and Luyanda Nxumalo, who excelled at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology and were awarded scholarships to study abroad,” said Malinga.
In the year 2018, Malinga revealed that he had eight players from his team who passed with flying colours in the Junior Certificate (JC) examination, where four of them scooped merits, three got first class passes and one got a second class.
