MBABANE – The Wafa Wafa Half marathon improved its record in terms of numbers as over 1 000 made it to this year’s edition on Saturday.

The numbers increased from 800 runners in 2018 to 1 015 this year as the race was staged last year. Some of the runners came from neighbouring countries including South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The race hosted by the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) dubbed ‘Wafa Wafa’ was launched in 2016. UEDF Public Relations Officer (PRO) Lieutenant Tengetile Khumalo said they were really happy that the event served its purpose of giving athletes competition and promoting healthy and physical activities through sports.

Relationship

“This race helps the nation and individuals to work close with the army and it creates good relationships. We are happy that people came in numbers to support the race. We are hoping it will continue to grow in the coming years,” she said. Some of the companies that partnered with UEDF in hosting the race included GetBucks, Letshego, Maqalf, Hlalawati and Puma while water points were sponsored by companies including Eswatini Royal Insurance Corporation (ESRIC), Royal Science and Technology Park (RSTP), Hlalawati, GetBucks, Zithande, Financial Services Regulatory (SFRA), Dixie’s International and Select Management.
