MBABANE – Eswatini-born professional boxer Sibonelo Ndzimandze has set a new record in South Africa. This was on Sunday at the Mpungose Hall during the 1st Annual Taptap Boxing Championship, where the local boxer won against that country’s Simphiwe Ntombelani.

“This was a new level in my boxing career as I was fighting a 6 round for the first time. I’m gradually growing my career though, as the higher you go the tougher and stiffer the competition becomes,” said the boxer.
Ndzimandze added that from the weekend fight, he learnt that he needed to up his training.

“At this level I really need a personal trainer who will assist me with strength and power training, because I’m lacking in that aspect,” he said.
The boxer said his opponent overpowered him during the bout but experience and fighting smart helped him secure a win.

The boxer noted that as a nation, we were very close to producing the first world champion in boxing and said we needed to come together as a nation and make sure we produce our own world champion.

However, he said that would not be possible if good boxers of his calibre were working alone in a foreign land and did not get support from home (Eswatini).
“I sincerely beg sponsors to come and support me, I was born and bred in Eswatini and I am representing Eswatini as a whole every time I step into the ring,” said the boxer.

Ndzimandze added that if for instance he got into the ring with worn-out boxing boots, what message was he conveying to the world about sport in Eswatini.

He noted that a lot of young athletes in Eswatini were looking up to professional athletes such as him, because they knew they were hard workers and always represented the country well which is why if they noted that they did not get support from their country, private companies and businesspeople they gave up on the talents. He said athletes from other countries were supported by their countries and pleaded for same in Eswatini.
