TAEKWONDO FOR 2020 OLYMPICS QUALIFIERS

MBABANE – The journey to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Games has begun for taekwondo artists, Wandile Maziya and Saneliso ‘Kick’ Masuku.


The duo left the country yesterday for Rabat, Morocco where they will be competing in the Africa Olympics Qualifiers with the hope of making it to the Olympics Games to start on July 24 to August 9 in Tokyo, Japan.


The duo left with Coach Manqoba Motsa and Chef de Mission Zakhele Dlamini, who is also the Eswatini Taekwondo Federation (ETF) President.
The team will arrive in Morocco today and the competitions are on Saturday and Sunday.


The artists said they were ready for the challenge ahead and they believed that they could qualify for the Olympics Games for the first time. ETF President Zakhele Dlamini said the duo had great potential and they could make the country proud.

“They just need to keep their heads high and fully focus on the competition. We are among the luckiest associations in the country, as we have been given the opportunity to represent the country in such highly profiled games. This is why we are going there and now for us is to deliver. These artists that have been selected through their performance and dedication in playing taekwondo. Their results are good and top,” he said.


The qualifiers will be held at the spacious Complex sportif Moulay Abdellah (Palais des sports) in Rabat, where artists from all over Africa will be in attendance.
The team coach Manqoba Motsa said now it was in the artists hands as they had almost done everything in terms of preparations.

“From what we have been doing at training, I believe they are ready to do their best and make the country proud. Those are not easy games as all the artists want the ticket to the Olympics Games through qualifications, so competition will be very tough. They have to believe and I believe that they can perform very well,” he said.


The team is expected back home next Wednesday. The team was financially assisted by the Olympics Committee through the Eswatini Olympics and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA).
